Beta Reading and Critique

A beta reader is a test reader of an unreleased manuscript, who gives feedback to the author from the point of view of an average reader. This feedback can be used by the author to fix issues with plot, pacing, character development, and consistency. The beta reader also serves as a sounding board to see if the work has the intended impact on the target market.

Beta reading starts at $30 for a novella/short story that is under 50k words. The next level is a standard length novel at under 90k words for $50. The final level is for our sagas or extended length novels at 120k words and less for $70. Proofreading is $50 for 90k words and under.

The turnaround time for our beta reading service depends on the length of the manuscript. For manuscripts that are 50k words and less, I typically take 7 days. For longer manuscripts, 51k - 120k words it typically takes 10 days. 

For proofreading services it typically takes 10-14 days depending on the length of your manuscript.

The first time through I like to just be an avid romance reader. I add in my reactions to the twists and turns in your plot. I like for the author to see my reactions as someone who just genuinely loves to read. After the initial read through I fill out my feedback form that you can see above. 

The second time through I do my deep dive. If there is a part that drags or contradicts something else you mention I flag it. If the phrasing feels off or I think something else might work better from the reader perspective, I add it to my comments. After the second read through I go back over my feedback to make sure I add everything else I want to point out from the second time through.

This process takes a little longer but I feel that makes my feedback and comments a lot more comprehensive and thoughtful than if I just did a single time through.
